The church steps open again

The Church of Akureyri and the steps leading up to it has long been a prominent landmark in our town. The church was consecrated in 1940 and there are more than 100 steps up to the church. 
Since June 2023 the steps have been closed for reconstruction and the work has been delayed again and again, until finally now they could be opened today. 
There was a formal opening ceremony at 16:00 and after mayor Ásthildur Sturludóttir's speech and a children's choir singing Christmas songs, everyone was invited to walk up the steps with a group of scouts leading the way, holding two Icelandic flags and torches.
