Winter solstice
And we had our first winter storm on the longest night of the year. We received between 15 and 20 cm of snow, which was less than forecast. There was some dry air in the upper atmosphere and it absorbed some of the moisture from the system. The temperature has been close to the freezing point most of the day which made the snow heavy and wet. Great for making snowmen, but not so great for shoveling.
I cleared a path to the birdfeeders this morning so I could fill them. The northern flicker stopped for a short visit this morning and the cardinal pair was in the ravine later this afternoon. The sparrows, chickadees, starlings and morning doves visited the feeders off and on today.
After I did the deck I started working on the driveway. I looked at the heavy, wet stuff that the plow had left at the end of the driveway and decided it could wait till later. The landlord called me around 11:30 (she is stuck in Newfoundland for an extra day) and she said that the carpenter would bring his snow blower over to do the driveway. There was still some light snow/rain falling when he was there. Later this afternoon I went back out and scraped the driveway again and put some salt down. I also did the deck. Tomorrow is supposed to be colder and I don't like a lot of ice.
I made some progress on my jigsaw puzzle too.
