An unexpected discovery
Tucked away in a small exhibition in Dunblane is this etching based on the Queen, ( see extra) from the famous Isle of Lewis chessmen.
It’s the work of artist and freelance archaeologist, Caroline Paterson, whose love of Scottish history and archaeology is a source of inspiration for her art.
(How the Isle of Lewis chessmen came to be buried on a remote beach in 1831 remains a mystery. All that is known is that they were made in Norway around the 12th -13th century from the ivory of walruses and chess was a popular pass time in the medieval world).
Now Caroline has created a set of etching prints based on them and they are an unexpected find in this modest well curated gallery above the zero waste shop , Weigh Ahead
It’s worth a visit if you are in the area.
