Jane Austen died here
Vikram always parks in Winchester in the street where Jane Austen died. He has total faith that he’ll get parking there and almost always does, even today when the crowds in Winchester were a heaving mass. It’s quite difficult to get to and is hidden amongst the college buildings so driving there can get quite tense. This time I hopped out as we hit traffic and went to claim the table where we were having lunch.
The house is owned by the college and is quiet and unassuming amongst more showy Georgian properties. It’s being opened next year for the 250th anniversary of her birth although I doubt there is much to see inside. Still it’s always moving to think of her dying there at only 41.
We picked up a present for HB at the Hambledon, and I bought some more presents.
Tried to go and see Chris in the Christmas market but there was a ten minute queue to get in and so we went home, via Hambledon to drop off cards and stamps for Mum and to handover her tree.
Home for cheese and biscuits in front of the fire and two episodes of the very entertaining Black Doves.
