If you can't beat them...

Hayes Garden Centre -Polar Bear

We were killing two birds with one stone, we needed to visit Lakeland and Hayes Garden Centre.   There were a couple of things we needed from Lakeland and a couple we didn't know we were going to get.  Lakeland always amuses me because we remember it when it was Lakeland Plastics selling plastic bags and not much else out of a lorry at Agricultural shows etc.

Next we wanted a Poinsettia and we always buy those from Hayes.  They are one of the few places we have found that don't keep their Poinsettias where they may get a cold draught.  Expose a Poinsettia to clod draughts and it will soon start to drop its leaves.  So having bought one we wrap them carefully in polythene and bubble wrap taken along for just that purpose, there is no point exposing them to cold air between the shop and the car.  That can be enough to cause leaf drop.

Christmas has been in full swing at Hayes for a number of weeks now.  While wandering round I pondered the puzzle of when Polar Bears became associated with Christmas and even more puzzling when and why penguins appeared on the scene.  I can just about accept polar bears as Santa is from Iceland and Polar Bears do occasionally crop up there even though they aren't native.  Penguins on the other hand are from the other end of the world so no chance of one in Iceland.
