St. Barbara’s wheat

On December 4th, St Barbara's day,  I planted some wheat seeds that a very kind man had given me at the Christmas market in the Vieux Port of Marseille when I bought two clay figurines for Lucas and Sara's crèche.

In Provence and of course also in Marseilles, it is customary to plant these seeds on damp cotton in three small trays and let them grow there.

These trays are used as decoration on the Christmas dinner table.
It is said that if the plants have grown tall and well, it will mean good luck for the following year's harvest.

I have kept up this tradition and now these seeds are growing at home, as you can see in my photo today.

Of course I will decorate our Christmas dinner table with them!
