secret garden

Immaculate ...

.... Conception! The BVM's that is. Not only that but it's the 70th anniversary of the Marian Year of 1954 when many grottoes and shrines were erected to the BVM and holy wells were spruced up - this is one of them and this statue was hoiked in place by four strong blokes. Apparently She appeared here too, during Penal Times. A priest was saying Mass (illegally of course) and the news went out and the soldiers were alerted in Bantry. They came hurtling forth and as they ascended onto a ridge to look across at where the priest and the congregation were sheltering, a lady appeared and seemed to spread out her pale blue cloak, concealing the priest so he could escape and causing mayhem amongst the soldiers.

The day was bright but still windy and the bungalow near the well was taking full advantage of the breeze with the washing flapping away on the line. The sea on the North Side was a remarkable colour, a very thin but bright blue line near the far shore.

We worked in the garden in the morning and it was most pleasant - clearing up the twiggy debris  and chopping up (Himself) the old tree that had fallen.
