Again and Again

By Ripitup

Yesterday, storm Darragh heading our direction caused us to change our parkrun tourism plans to travel into London to meet Carol.  Closure of the Prom park due to the weather and cancellation of Wickford parkrun put pay to the next 2 alternates.
Several events had declared an intent to go ahead by Friday evening, stating early course inspections would take place Saturday and our plan was to head for Chelmsford which was central to several of these and monitor for updates.
At around 8.15, Billericay confirmed on Facebook that they had checked the course and were going ahead. South Woodham Ferrers had broadcast a short video saying check was underway.. We had been waiting at Costa in Chelmer village as the news landed and, with no other updates from Chelmsford or Great Notley we opted to head for Billericay.  By 8:45, South Woodham and Notley had said they were good to go but still nothing from Chelmsford. The weather had worsened and we were sat in the carpark at Billericay, readying ourselves to head to the start in the wind and rain. Billericay post on Facebook that they have cancelled.
We debate, very briefly, the next plan and decide to head for Brentwood. We know that we will likely arrive there at 9.05 (parkrun starts at 9) but the carpark nearest the start may have spaces, they may not start on time, we may not hit traffic.   We have resigned ourselves to not making it and heading for breakfast instead at this point, knowing we did everything we could.  There are a few obstacles on route (see extra) and the weather is worsening.
We pull into the carpark as the parkrunners are setting off and, with a pretty rapid exit, we are parkrunning.
The weather is now foul and we are at, what would have been, low down on our list of choices as it is a country park, mostly on grass, mostly exposed and very undulating.  Toward the back of about 100 people, I'd gone splat before we'd reached the first marshal.
I walked with 2 ladies wearing parkwalker vests, a third who had mudclaws on her feet and kept running off and returning and a  chatty man.  Elaine, who hates mud was further back having had to park the car and Emma was a bit ahead (and a small dot on the hill in my picture) .
The volunteers, as I have come to expect,  were all in at this point. Standing around in that weather is way worse than struggling through it, I think. At the finish, Emma had taken some small shelter from a tree and we were offered cake as it was the tenth anniversary. we chatted to the volunteers as we waited for Elaine, agreed on how happy we were to have made it and that there was not any part of us that wasn't wet or getting cold.
We headed to the cafe, grabbing some dry clothes from the car. I stripped off my tee-shirt in the loo, replacing it with my hoody and was soon enjoying my hot chocolate reward.  The journey home was uneventful and the rest of the day spent indoors.
