The history bit

Every trip LHRH take usually has some sort of historical/ruined building/castle visit - hazard of marrying an archaeologist! This time it was a bit more inaccessible than normal.
Oronsay is a tidal island south of Colonsay which can be reached across The Strand, a large stretch of beach, at low tide. The island is run by the RSPB and only houses 5 people. We had originally planned to visit on Tuesday but we checked the tide times while at the Colonsay shop and realised today would give us an hour longer on Oronsay.
We set off from the campsite about 2pm, with low tide at 5 and The Strand accessible from around 3.30-6.30. We had a few stops on the way to look at some ruins and grass-covered mounds (usual archaeologist eye candy) before walking over what would normally be the bottom of the sea!
We walked for around 3 miles to reach the 14th century priory, where LH got very excited about the 30+ medieval carved gravestones which managed to survive the reformation.
Unfortunately on our way back the heavens opened and we got caught in a rain storm. LHRH were very wet and cold by the time we got back to our tent. A BBQ, a campfire and a hot chocolate managed to heat us up- and maybe some more cider...
