GUARDING THE COAST

Being close to the coastline there is often danger around the corner.
Whilst both Filey and Scarborough have large lifeboats, and lifeguards on duty in the summer months, there are many other volunteers who give up their time to provide rescue services.

This morning in Filey, the local Coastguard were practising shore-rescues from along the promenade.

Both the Scarborough and Filey Teams form a BURT Unit - Back-Up Response Team. They are particularly proficient in cliff rescue situations. One of the latest entries from their website shows . . .

25/7/13 - Scarborough CG to assist Filey CG deal with a dog that had gone over the cliff at Blue Dolphin. A team put on to bottom of cliff. Dog located having dropped approx 150ft. After a little game of cat and mouse the dog was finally captured. Filey ILB assisted and the dog was taken back to Filey Beach by lifeboat before being taken to a local vet with a suspected broken leg.

This image shows the Coastguard House, in the Old Tollhouse, Sandside, Scarborough UK. This grand old building is situated under the steep cliffs. Part of the wall of Scarborough Castle can be seen climbing left and on top. The Tollhouse itself has a wonderful tiny ship as a windvane.
