In Chaos, In Chorus

I could hear the starlings some way off in the distance as I walked through the woodland. I wasn't even sure from which direction the sound came and couldn't see them.

When the trees opened up a bit I looked again. Several tree tops were covered with them calling out in unison. A great cacophony of birdsong. Then suddenly everything went quiet and the birds took off together, all at once. It was quite a sight to see so many birds in chaos, yet in chorus.
