High Water Everywhere
The key words here seem to be “flood” and “management”. We would appear to have plenty of the former and not so much of the latter, given that the temporary bridge and working platform set up to build the flood defences, are presently several feet under the raging torrent.
Not as much rain this morning, but the run-off from the fells after yesterday’s downpours has now made it into the River Kent, though we do seem to have got away quite lightly, compared to other areas of the U.K.
Ventured out for our normal Sunday coffee this morning, but encountered many obstacles. Couldn’t get parked in any of our usual places - blame the Mountain Festival - and wherever we went we had to dodge either packs of mud covered fell runners or hordes of beardy types dressed more for an ascent of the Eiger than a stroll up Highgate. Yep - Mountain Festival again!
The final nail in the coffin was arriving at Caffè Nero to find they were doing takeaway only due to water coming through the light fittings, courtesy of a leaky roof.
We grabbed a couple of coffees and headed back to the car, only for the heavens to open before we’d gone twenty yards. Still it was a good test of my new waxed jacket!
Just to finish a miserable morning off, when I got back to the car I turned on the radio and heard the result of the Las Vegas Grand Prix - something I’d been trying to avoid so I could watch the highlights show without knowing the outcome of the race. Hey ho. I’ll still watch the highlights but it won’t be the same.
Panto rehearsal this afternoon, and we’re out seeing the comedian Milton Jones tonight, so the day should - hopefully - end better than it started…
