Sally Mair - Loving life

Snow day

All was fine when I woke up this morning, but an hour later when I was ready to head to Polwarth for the sale a few snowflakes had started to fall, top left. Large wet flakes which were lying as they fell. I put the sweeping brush into the car in case I needed to clear it later on, and set off.
It's 3.2miles from my house to the church, it takes just 10-15 minutes to drive. Not today though.
The snow built up as I drove and by the time I got there, quite a level of wet slushy snow had built up on the, fortunately still quiet, roads. I decided to park in the road across from the church which is a little less busy and a little wider rather than the road I had driven up. There is a slight incline there. As I drove onto it, the wheels locked several times as the car slipped sideways. I parked though. As I got out of the car I realised on clearing the slush to check, that I'd actually parked on double yellows! Back into the car and another attempt on the hill. I finally managed to make some progress up and then stopped and did a 3 point turn when the road was clear. That meant that I could park facing downhill not up, so it would be easier when it was time to leave.
I got soaked walking the 50 yards to the church but was glad to be in and dry safely.
Last night as we started to set things out, the hall looked like the right hand upper of the collage. Just after the sale started, it looked like the lower image.
People checked online with us throughout the morning whether the sale would go ahead. There wasn't really much choice, sellers had brought their goods in already. They would need to pick them up at the end of the sale so the church could be ready for its normal use tomorrow.
I was on the door, which meant I could see what was happening outside, the snow was falling thick and fast. People were arriving with remarkable stories of walking across parks pulling children on sledges....of seeing abandoned cars and vehicles unable to get up hills and so skidding and blocking roads.... and the snow kept falling.
Over the 2.5 (I think) hours of the sale just over 400 people came and went. In April for the same sale there were 480, so today's total was remarkable.
Driving conditions were still not good though and the buses were all off at one point, as Edinburgh skidded its way into chaos.
In my preparations for what might happen at the end of the day, I remembered I had friends who lived near by so assured myself that they would make me welcome if I was stuck! I could easily walk that far.
As it happened, by the time the sale was over, the tables were much depleted. Once everything had been sorted and unsold goods put into individual piles so that the owners could come back and pick up their own and it was time to leave, the snow had stopped. The temperature was 4' and the thaw was underway.
The roads weren't clear, but I made it home pretty easily. I was very happy though that I had my sweeping brush in the car to clean the snow off the roof and windows of the car quickly and that I had parked facing downhill.

I had been due to meet a builder at the Rectory mid afternoon, but decided to cancel. That can wait for another day.
Hope everyone is safe and warm and dry inside, back to 14 degrees tomorrow!
