High Spy t’other way
We ummed and ahhed a bit this morning before deciding to head from the hotel up to Nitting Haws and onto High Spy. It sounds quite short when you say it like that but we enjoyed the meandering path through the quaint Lakes outcrops, up an increasingly icy fell (Dad spotting an incredible ice spike on the way (extra)) and steadily into the top with the odd cup of tea on the way! We made the most of time and our day, having plenty to play with.
How lucky we were that there wasn’t a breath of air and the cold temperatures were just a joy to walk uphill in - never too biting. The views were expansive with the remnants of this morning’s temperature inversion lingering on the hillsides and over Derwentwater. The Eden Valley looked like it had an inversion all day.
The moody light was perfect for setting off the high snow-capped peaks and as we reached the summit. Last year, we turned round and headed over Maiden Moor. This year, we stopped for a few pics as the sun came out and headed on south to drop down Rigghead Quarries and Tongue Gill.
I wasn’t sure how this path would be but thankfully, it was dry slate which made life a lot easier than iced up slate!
We turned off north near the bottom for that wonderfully pretty view of Castle Crag and a very autumnal woods and river walk home.
A couple of hours chilling went by very quickly and dinner was utterly amazing. We’ve headed to our rooms (after a good couple of hours more chatter) early, tired and satisfied!
