We had a good roll up at Miss Traill’s House today as a rose expert was visiting from Maitland. I always get a bit sceptical of experts but this chap was a mine of information. We did a tour of the garden and he explained each type of rose and the care it needed over the following year. He knew the names of most of them and when they they were propagated. This is a French variety 1881. It is huge and could possibly be 100 years old. I prefer the single varieties and one of my favourites is called Mermaid.
A lot of the older gardeners have left and we have a new bunch of enthusiastic volunteers at the moment. My friend Lyn came and we continued weeding the Herb Garden trying to get it looking like it did in Miss Traill’s time. She wasn’t an avid photographer I don’t think as there aren’t a lot of photos of the garden in the archives. We can’t use herbicides so some of the weeds are hard (impossible ) to control.
