One of the prettiest and (at times) dramatic drives that one can take in the Blue Mountains is the trip down into the Megalong Valley. Unfortunately earlier in the year, an horrendous rain event washed away much of the traffic surface and drastically undermined the cliff face supporting the road.
Lots of people live down there and so after a period of emergency helicopter operations, it became urgent to make quick (if very temporary) repairs so that folk could routinely get in and out of the area. I had avoided going down there for quite a while, fearing that sight-seeing excursions would unnecessarily add to congestion. Aaaanyway, I ventured down there today believing that improvements must have been nearly completed by now. The area is as beautiful as ever but progress has to be interrupted from time to time for one slow, chewed up lane to allow passage.
There is so much to do and it's been months ... but the council almost certainly needs Federal grants to get the job done. Never fear. We can all still applaud the PM, enjoying his budgetry surplus. Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
