An obnoxiously loud nightclub reverberating across the centre of Tunduru made the 6.30am departure time quite tough. However it’s my sister’s 40th birthday today, so that provided a good reason to roll out of bed and send warm wishes from afar.

By 7.30am we’d already seen two overturned lorries, so it felt like a challenging day. However the field trip continued to exceed my expectations as we visited some villages where we have helped support the necessary responses to incidents of human-wildlife conflict. For example, if a field of maize is trampled by elephants and they need to be urgently chased away, there is now a clearer system for reporting and getting help from the authorities.
