Day 312/24. An ancient stone circle with a pub.
A visit to Avebury Ring today. Way better than Stonehenge and free to visit.This is the site from the air with my little drone. A very nice lunch in the pub in the centre of the ring. I did not feel any ancient 'presences;
The Avebury monument is vast, and consists of several smaller sites of varying dates. The earliest of these, the earthworks ring, dates to between 3400 and 2625 BC. Later additions include the stone henge and several stone circles. Starting in around the 14th century, locals began dismantling the stone circles for one reason or another: to clear land, to provide material for other building projects, or simply to efface a pagan monument. In 1648 John Aubrey visited the site and found most of the stones still standing or lying nearby. By the 1800s the stones were protected and restored.
A short walk away is the mysterious Silbury Hill. A man made hill from thousands of years ago with no known purpose. See extra picture today.
