Holidays! Day 4
Another brilliant day! Liz, our guide from yesterday gave us full written instructions, plus photos, on how to get to The Big Buddha, then to Tai O, a traditional old fishing village.
Our hotel is joined to a huge shopping mall, full of ultra high-end shops, but also a main underground station. We went to Tung Chung station, which is right at the cable car up the hill to the Big Buddha. We splashed out on the ‘crystal cable car’ which had a glass bottom! It was about half an hour, and was a spectacular ride - even did a right angled bend over the first hill before you could see the BB in the distance. AND there was a walkway the WHOLE WAY!
The village at the top of the mountain was full of tourist shops, including a wonderful one full of chopsticks! We both walked up the 368 steps to the Big Buddha. JR walked up the 368 steps to the Big Buddha. We gazed up at the Big Buddha, but the sun was not in the right position, so we didn’t see it clearly (Buddhas always face west, I heard a tour guide telling his group).
From there we got a bus to the fishing village, which was fun. We sailed up the river past the rickety old stilt houses, before heading out to sea, possibly to see the rare white dolphins. But not today.
We wandered round the wee lanes, full of dozens of shops selling all sorts - including puffer fish! (See Extra)
Back to the bus stop, and a 40 minute ride back to Tung Chung, the bus was full - people were standing, hanging on for dear life as we hurtled at great speed up and down hills and round bends.
Back in the city, then one change to our station, which is in the posh shopping mall, and has a direct link to our hotel.
Only 13,000 steps today (!), so we had enough energy to plop into the pool for a while.
A couple of Americans told us on the train home that Trump had won. It says more about the Democrat candidate and their campaign, that they were (well) beaten by such a man.
Extras: Tai O, the fishing village.
