Holidays! Day 3
A super day, though I can hardly move - so sore, having walked all round HK. (13,497 steps!!!)
Started off with a fantastic breakfast - absolutely everything on offer, including freshly steamed dim sums in a huge steamer.
We then strolled across the road to the Hong Kong Park - right in the middle of the city - beautiful walkways past ponds full of terrapins and huge orange fish, waterfalls, butterflies and every tree is numbered and named. There is an aviary, but we didn’t make it that far. Tomorrow.
In the afternoon we met up with our tour guide, Liz. What a terrific time we had. She has so much knowledge of the culture and history of how people live here, of course. We took a taxi up to the top of the mountain, had the obligatory photos, then we took the Peak Tram down, at 45° the whole way.
We then walked down through town, past the lines where the reclaimed sea levels used to be each decade or so, to the ferry. And what should we see but our boat ship, waiting for us.
We walked round the area, including the flower market streets, and pet shops street. Yes, we ooh-ed and aaah-ed at the puppies, kittens, rabbits and fantastic colourful wee fish. We tried some traditional treats - my favourite being a stick of seven balls, filled with rice and a flavour (chocolate, coconut, banana) and baked in a special waffle maker. Truly delicious!
We travelled on the underground too. Pretty easy if you’ve been on the London one. MUCH cleaner! NO litter. NO graffiti. NO beggars (they are all helped back into work and/or accommodation). Liz left us to take the underground on our own back to our hotel. Easy peasy.
Liz’s parents (probably our age) escaped from China in the 60s. But China is gradually taking over again. Fascinating. What a truly unique city this is. Or, as my wee Aussie pal says, ‘You’d have to be bonkers not to like Honkers!’
TOOOO tired to go for a swim!
