Sea Potato
Today was the first time Bertie and I had been down to Calgary for a walk since storm Ashley passed by a couple of weeks ago and I was quite shocked to see the damage wreaked by it. A line of large rounded boulders had been thrown up onto the track to the pier by the force of the sea, part of the track had been undermined and had subsequently collapsed, then further on, large amounts of kelp have been left high above normal sea level. The area around the old pier had also been affected with large granite blocks now on the shore instead of on the pier, and a fence had been completely washed away (extra).
After our walk, we had a wander on the beach and that’s where I came across this sea potato which is actually a type of sea urchin that lives in a burrow in the sand. When they are alive they are covered in soft spines, giving them a furry appearance, but this one was dead and had lost all its spines as well as its internal organs.
