Discombobulation
I guess there are two main reasons you might know about Salford Lads Club*. The first is that you live in the neck of the woods where the club is situated, and the second is that you know something about The Smiths; a picture of the band taken in front of the club featured on the inner sleeve of their album, 'The Queen Is Dead'.
The club has found itself in something of a financial hole recently, and needs £250,000. The Manchester Evening News started a fundraiser, which got off to a fairly pedestrian start.
But then Graham Nash (of The Hollies and Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young fame) donated £10,000, and the council added a further £100,000, taking the fund up to around £160,000.
To be honest, I still wasn't confident they'd make it but today Morrissey contributed £50,000.
Now, I have mixed feelings about this. Morrissey has fallen a long way in my opinion, and the donation does nothing to ameliorate his latter day right wing and, I'd say, racist views.
On the other hand, plenty of young men and women will benefit from his largesse, which is a good place to point out that the institution is now called The Salford Lads And Girls Club!
