Rarity

We went to look for a snow bunting today at Budleigh Salterton.  There are two feeding there on a small strip of grass between shingle and river. SEE EXTRA. Several other birders joined us. They are rare visitors and usually found in the north and east. Globally, they breed around the arctic from Scandinavia to Alaska, Canada and Greenland and migrate south in winter. They are a scarce breeding species in the UK. It is a lovely bird to see. The official birdwatcher was well pleased, and in her notebook listing today’s birds she wrote the name in capital letters with 5 exclamation marks and three stars. A water pipit also received the same treatment.
