Ely Cathedral
Having waved off the little family, we frantically attempt to put the cottage back to its pre-Lili state - so much has had to be moved out of her reach! We manage to get everything together, missing the deadline by 10 mins, but the cleaner is very understanding!
We then make our way towards Ely. We’re staying outside Saffron Walton for three nights before heading home and Ely is on our route. I’ve wanted to visit the cathedral for years, ever since my days as a student in UEA Norwich when the long and tedious cross country train journey from Holyhead passed by the magnificent building.
Parking takes longer than expected - Ely has a number of car parks - unusually without charge - but G wants the one that has electric chargers!
When we do eventually get to the cathedral it’s every bit as magnificent as I’d expected - particularly the famous octagon. We consider taking the octagon tower tour, but I decide against it thinking it may be pushing my luck! As it is, climbing the steps to the Stained Glass Museum is enough for me!
Refreshments in the delightful Almonry Tearooms provide sustenance before our drive to our accommodation for the next three nights - a fabulous barn conversion. It’s a tiny two story building very cleverly converted to accommodate couples - complete with wood burning stove, kitchen and en-suite bedroom.
My main today’s a panoramic view of the octagon tower and the nave roof, with another view of the octagon in the background extras.
Edit: I’ve now added a collage from the Stained Glass Museum
