Top of the world

We caught the train at 8am and travelled for six enthralling hours.  First through the outskirts of Oslo, which comprised small country settlements and villages that continued or an hour or so then into the Hallingdal valley and along lakes and forests of white trunked birch and tall pine. We then climbed up towards FInse, the tallest village on the line that is only accessible by train, past a glacier and flat, lake dotted landscape with pockets of snow.  All along the way there were cabins, dotted across the landscape painted black or red which I imagine are holiday cabins.  Norway apparently has the most cabins per head of any country but it was surprising to see them in such remote landscape.  I guess they remain close to the railway line

As we dropped down through higher peaks and alongside deeper lakes we went through tunnel after tunnel.  Some no more than covered track as in the picture.

Arrived in Bergen at around 3pm and went out for a bit of a walk coming back to the hotel for tea.

We had a good fish dinner at the fish restaurant Fjellskal in the  Mathallen opposite the hotel

After dinner we all walked around the area a bit and looked at the Hansiatic quarter.  We’re staying in the Bergen Bors hotel by the harbour.
