When in Rome

We’ve had a very long day starting with a 4.30 alarm and a 7.45 flight from Stansted. We’d decided to take hand luggage only to save time but a Jet 2 lady stopped me at the gate and asked if I’d put my case in the hold as they were short of space. I’d only just managed to squeeze 3 days worth of clothes into my wheelie case and put a couple of bits into D’s bag so it was a bit of a pain that I could have actually taken a bigger bag and all the liquids I wanted. It was a good flight and after picking up my case from the carousel we got a train into Rome then walked 30mins to our hotel. After a quick change (it’s quite warm here) we got on one of those terribly touristy open top buses and saw some of the major sites. We hopped off at the Spanish steps (quite underwhelming) then headed to the Trevi fountain which I was really excited to see. Would you believe THEY HAD DRAINED IT!! Not only was it bone dry but they’ve erected scaffolding all around it. It didn’t stop the hundreds of tourists all trying to get close and take photos. We then caught the metro back to the hotel, had an hour’s rest and got ready for dinner. Definitely the highlight of the day was a fabulous Italian restaurant just around the corner from our hotel. It was very loud, full of Italians and dirt cheap. We had 3 amazing courses plus wine for 57 euros. We’re currently sitting in an Irish bar where they’re watching a football match on tv at full volume. Very surreal.
