yellow waters kakadu...fish eagle

This time last year jnr and I were on Groote Eylandt for A's 30th birthday.
This year, A, E and I are celebrating '31' on a river boat on Kakadu's Yellow Water Billabong a part of the Yellow Water Wetlands.
An incredibly special part of the world and known as a RAMSAR Wetland (the name given to a list of the world's most important wetlands) and with World Heritage Status.

Late afternoon and into early evening we wandered gently down the South Alligator River and with the help of our intrepid captain and guide, spotted crocodiles basking and swimming, lotus lilies and their special walking birds the comb crested jacanas, whistling ducks, a red legged jabiru, an azure kingfisher and this beautiful fish eagle.
Making quick work of a fresh caught fish, the 'bully birds' (whistling kites) were in close attendance and waiting for scraps or prepared to 'bully' them away from the eagle.
The fish eagle is a very important entity and considered by the custodians of this land to be a spirit bird.

It's hard to explain what it is like to be here. The magic, mystery and complexity of the land and connection with its people and custodians is truly amazing ( a phrase I know is being overused already!)
