La Corbiere revisited
More high tide fabulousness this morning - I have put a few shots in extras. The seaweed hanging off the light string made me laugh.
But my pic of the day is Jersey’s elegant 150 year old lighthouse, La Corbiere. I went on a guided tour, along the causeway, up the steps and inside, all the way up to the top. I did this once before on a school trip, a long time ago!
The guide was amusing and very knowledgeable. Imagine constructing this, on top of a huge rock in notoriously rough seas? It was automated in 1974 and the technology was patented and used in lighthouses across Britain. Who knew?
In WW2, naturally, a concrete bunker was added to the structure, on the sea side to house soldiers on lookout duty. The light was disabled, until one night the commandant’s boat ran on to the rocks!
One very useful concrete addition the occupying forces made though was to widen the old narrow causeway. The lighthouse is a fair way from ‘land’ and only accessible when the tide is out.
I got home and was looking forward to a little down time when daughter B called and said ‘where are my exam certificates?’ Hmmm. I am now surrounded by boxes and bags where I’ve pulled everything out to search for them. Had to laugh as I found my o level exam timetable (almost as old as the lighthouse!) but nothing of hers.
