View south-west from Uplands playing field

Not much to say about this. I went out again to prospect for viewpoints to record views towards St Laurence church in the centre of town, but from a distance. From here at Upends playing fields I found you could only see the top of the spire. But the view to the south-west was rathe stunning.

The sun is setting over the Forest of Dean and South Wales. The gap in the hills is a very unusual situation, where a river flows west and has broken through the Cotswold escarpment, as happens at Bath and also Bristol, but few other places in the long line of hills which eventually stretch as far as the east coast of England in Yorkshire.

The ridge you can see with a steep slope reflects the formation of a wave cut platform when that edge of the escarpment was bordering the sea in ancient geological days.
