The Lozarithm Lens

Pinboard #28 (Saturday 12th October 2024)

Yesterday I walked in to Calne for some outdoor fish and chips as it struck me that as the seasons change there may not be many more opportunities this year. I had another look for the mystery creatures on the Marden and the Wilts and Berks canal but it now seems certain that they didn't set up home and have moved on, so I can reveal that they were otters.

There have always been otters on the River Avon near Chippenham and Lacock. Anglers often report seeing them making a splash and a lot of noise and scaring away all the fish. I always keep an eye out and have seen their spreints, but have never spotted a Eurasian Otter in the wild. The River Marden flows into the Avon near Chippenham so juvenile otters looking to set up their own territory could easily find themselves here. The last sighting of otters in Calne was in 2014, just for a day or so, and of course I missed them.

When I got home I created this pinboard of music performers, but it was too dark to photograph in the porch in natural light, so that waited until this morning.

The miscellaneous subjects are Keith Moon, manic drummer for The Who; Polly Jean Harvey; Bobby Gillespie from the Glasgow-based band Primal Scream; Anne Pigalle, a Parisienne singer who made a marvellous album for the ZTT label in 1985 whilst briefly based in London; Nancy Sinatra wearing boots not made for walking, c. 1967; Tori Amos, posing for the cover of her 1994 album Under The Pink.

A slow shutter speed but looks sharper in Large,.
