and suddenly remembering the initials IGB: the Inner German Border. Aka the Iron Curtain. I don't think we recognised the DDR as a state: it was the Soviet Zone of Occupation. The story was that each watchtower needed 3 guards. One to read the daily orders. A second to write up the log. The third was there to keep an eye on the two dangerous intellectuals. Extra: the taxi to get there. May 1986.
