At midday the cuckoo came out of his little house above the Floral Clock in Princes Street although the hands of the clock were about seven minutes slow.  Each year the oldest floral clock in the world has a  display to illustrate an  important anniversary with over 35000 flowers and plants of 20 different species.  This year it commemorates 200 years of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI)   When it was completed in June the Lord Provost of Edinburgh said It’s important that we honour organisations and individuals that have a positive impact on our communities. The RNLI volunteers and staff work tirelessly to save lives at sea daily, and after 200 years they have saved over 146,000 lives.”
In Scotland there are 46 lifeboat stations with two of the busiest being operated entirely by volunteers who risk their own lives often in atrocious conditions
