More Adventures In Loutro

With the forecast for clouds and possibly some light rain, we decided to give the beach a miss and caught the ferry to Loutro, where we walked round the coast path to Phoenix Bay.

While we were enjoying a drink in the taverna there, the clouds got darker and heavier and, just as we set off back, we heard the first rumbles of thunder.

We’d just rounded the final bend of the path before the descent back into Loutro when we saw the rain sweeping down from the mountains and, by the time we reached the shelter of a cafe 100 yards away we were soaked.

We hid in the cafe kitchen with the staff and 4 other walkers for 20 minutes of torrential rain before it stopped as suddenly as it had started.

In Loutro, the sun had come out again but taverna and shop owners were busy sweeping the rain away and we managed to get a rather soggy lunch before catching the next ferry back.

Sadly, the unexpected storm had caused tragedy in the Samariá Gorge just down the coast where a German tourist was killed in a rockfall caused by the rain.

We sat on our balcony and watched as other walkers rescued from the gorge were brought off the late afternoon ferry and camera crews tried to interview them and some of their rescuers for the TV news.

The blip is off the very door at the hotel in Loutro behind which our luggage was ‘securely’ stored when we had to leave it there overnight when we arrived last week. We used to have a tele like the one outside it when I was a boy, about 65 years ago? Gave the photo a bit of retro treatment.
