Confusion, then organisation

We were indoors but we could hear a real commotion outside. The screeching of cranes carries a long way!
We went out to see what was going on and found this 70 or so cranes wheeling around in the sky. They were very disorganised and couldn't agree on which way to turn, so groups swung around in different directions and when they'd completed their circles they collided with each other.
One moment they seemed to be searching for a thermal, the next moment they were trying to form a V formation, but then the leaders would return to circling and confusion returned.
After 5 minutes or so a breakaway group started heading south and the rest quickly followed along  and as they disappeared behind the trees they had made it into a giant V.
Next stop Spain or Portugal!
