Railway Foundry Buildings, Llanidloes
I am unable to upload any pictures from today, I do not know why but the PC will not recognise the device (mobile phone) despite the fact that I pretty well use this device most days. Tech is seriously pis.... getting me down.
So I am using images from my perambulations around Llanidloes Railway Foundry Buildings yesterday.
The main is a very small part of the entire industrial complex but gives an idea of how important it was. The brickwork and detail around these windows is wonderful and epitomises the degree to which the architects and builders took pride in their work. Their legacy.
The extra is one of many developments of cottages built for the workers and staff at the foundry.
A local lady tells me the cottage she lives in was once a boarding house for itinerant workers. A census from the turn of the century lists over twenty 'residents' at the house. The landlady was 'double renting' - a term used to describe how she rented beds to workers who did night shifts, and the same rooms were rented to workers who did daytime shifts.
No social services benefits and such like in those days. Very little regard to health and safety as we know it.
Times were hard and it was pretty well every man for himself.
Aren't we lucky?
