Drinking

If I look closely, this photograph sums up the day quite well.
First, it represents cleaning. The picture is from the end of the day, but we started by having a quick clean around as Mark and Rob were coming for lunch.

Secondly, you can see a couple of bottles that we drank during the afternoon. The two in the shot are not everything: there’s another partly consumed bottle of wine in the fridge.

Thirdly, the golden glass is a champagne flute that was a present to PY from a previous boss. They’re metallic (not glass) and they're lovely to use. They also clean without streaks, which makes them easier to wash than their glass counterparts. They are also great when eating outside, as they are less likely to break. The weather was decent enough to eat out this afternoon.

Fourthly, it’s not all alcohol-related. The blue plastic tumblers are part of a set that live inside a jug. I always use them for water when we have dining guests. I don’t know why I pick this particular set and not some of the other glasses we have.

Finally, there are a bunch of plastic food containers. No matter how hard we try, it seems almost impossible to shop locally and sustainably. The nearest walkable shops are all branches of the major chains: Waitrose, Sainsbury’s, Co-op and, a bit further, Tesco. The nearest convenience store sells almost nothing, except a small selection of fruit and vegetables, that’s not pre-packed and long-life.
