The Red Devil
A fun day being tourists in York, with MrM's brother and sister-in-law, Glenn and Malyn, who are visiting from Australia.
We travelled there and back by public transport and, for once, the trains were behaving! From York station we walked into the city centre, and after some reviving coffee and cake wandered around York - the Minster, the Shambles, the fabulous museum gardens, a boat trip on the River Ouse... Finally, after a late lunch/early tea of traditional fish & chips at Drake's we walked back to the station along the city walls.
Sadly, an hour's wait in Huddersfield for the bus back home meant that we had no option(!) but to go into the Head of Steam for a drink.
We passed the Red Devil, which is outside No. 33 Stonegate. Apparently the Red Devil is the traditional symbol of a printer, and this one indicates the way to Coffee Yard where, in the 18th century, the eccentric writer and publisher Thomas Gent had his premises.
