Three Brethren
Played Whack-a-mole with the showery weather forecast and picked the Selkirk hills for a wee dogrun. We managed to dodge most of the precipitation and enjoyed a few kilometres running along the Southern Upland Way and Cross Borders Drove road, last visited in March 2020.
The cairns are iconic and afford a great view of the locality, I remember they were a highlight of the day between Innerleithen and Melrose on the SUW in 1990.
The Three Brethren cairns mark the boundaries of the estates of Buccleuch, Yair and Selkirk Burgh at a height of 465m. They are visited by riders during the Selkirk Common Riding in June each year. The first cairn was built by Alexander Pringle, Laird of Yair and Whytbank Tower in 1512. However, one cairn was considered to be insufficient and another two were built at a later date.
