Herring
Herring ihaa been playing a very important part in the cultural, economic and social life in along the Baltic coast. Today we went to Kappeln and throughout the town centre you find brass plagues depicting a herring as well as the name of a person or company that has made a contribution, financial or otherwise, to the upkeep and development of the town. Then there is the Heringzaun, herring fence, in the river Schlei. It guides the shawls of herring into the nets during certain times of the year. It is the only one left. Then there was the fish market selling local produce, including herring. And so it goes on.
This is a wonderful part of northern Germany and there will be more explored over the next few days.
The extras are of a carving in St Nikolaus Kirche,, the bridge across the Schlei opened and the Eckernfoerde beach with the Strandkoerbe
