The Wrong Platform

The 18:05 goes from platform 14 NOT 7

The train is 10 carriages long - NOT two trains of 5

I boarded the front train, as I have learnt over the years to get on the train that is about to leave.

We left and then the train was suddenly silent as the air conditioning went off and we lost all power.

We were evicted from the dead train at Vauxhall and not given any guidance on what to do.

As trains to Winchester and beyond do not normally stop at Vauxhall we boarded a train BACK to Waterloo

By now those of us in the same position were chatting - we never do that.

We were all checking our phone apps for the times and platforms of the next departures.

I sprinted from the train and ran to the platform of the next train just as the doors closed. The aim is to run the trains on time and not to care about the people evicted from a previous one. The guard on the platform was subjected to much abuse from those of us who had done the same thing.

Then we began the game of guessing the platform of the next train - they tend not to tell you until it has arrived and then it is a stampede to reach it.

In the image we have all made a guess at the platform and are hoping that we are right.

I was home 1.5 hours late

Madeleine was born in May and the finished result was handed over today (yes they took me a while)
