Stone-curlew on Stronsay
I missed the Westray kite, but managed to see the Stronsay stone-curlew. When I head out looking for a particular bird, I'm really out for the walk or cycle too so am not too bothered if I don't see a particular bird. This one was seen a few days ago. When I got to the spot, there was no sign so I cycled about the island seeing what else was about and saw 2 merlins, 22 black-tailed godwit, arctic, sandwich and common terns etc. I went back to the the stone-curlew site and, after sitting through a heavy a shower, it suddenly emerged. It is only the sixth record for the isles. Not common anywhere in the UK and mainly in the S.E. of England. First I have seen.
