Messing about
Friday night film club was on Saturday night this week. The chosen film, Anselm, directed by Wim Wenders about the German artist Anselm Kiefer. I was so drowsy on Saturday night that I couldn’t really watch it. Which is why I’m watching a film in the daytime - something I normally don’t do. I hadn’t heard of him before, and found his work exciting and inspiring. I felt I was on the edge of understanding. It’s subtle, I think, hinting at death, Germany’s past, surveillance, Jewish myths and poetry, also beauty and joy.
In this blip you see the film playing on my i pad - he is walking towards an open door with trees beyond, which shows you how very enormous his canvas is - most of his work is as big as a building, some of it is buildings. Also visible, a reflection of my open door with trees beyond and just a hint of my hand. The canvas shows a recurring theme of black fence posts, some collapsing, in a snowy landscape, which to me hint at gravestones.
The extra shows you some other work which I found very powerful- to me hinting at watchtowers and imprisonment - though it’s actually piles of garden sheds I suppose.
