This is a new poster on my tram. According to my cousin it is one of Melbourne's scariest tram rides.... I consider it more crazy & sometimes entertaining, but usually smelly (just being honest).
This tram goes through several council, housing commission flat estates...high rise & low-rise. Melbourne has always been multicultural - most of the population are migrants from Asia & Europe, but it's even more so now with many Sudanese & Somalian refugees being the 'new' emigrants. Anyway besides emigrants the public housing in the area has many people that have taken to drugs and alcohol as a way to get through their days....it's actually very saddening & waste of potential... But it is also these individuals that are generally in a cycle of blame and anger that openly rant to the ethnic people on the tram... I am one of these ethnics.. I'm an Indian and my parents moved to Melbourne in 1987 as skilled immigrants. When I'm told to 'Go home', I have been tempted to tell them that 'I am home'...
I'm very blazé about racial rants nowadays as I usually feel pity for the person that is expressing so much ignorance....but, this advertisement made me consider how many times someone has come to the aid of people getting racial abused & not once can I remember someone telling the raving individual to 'Shut-Up', on one occasion I had an African gentlemen comforting me and taking a protective role whilst other commuters pretended to ignore it..I understand people under the influence of drugs or alcohol are difficult to reason with but it's no excuse.....
At least the tram authorities are encouraging some compassionate behaviour....
