Moth To A Plane
Hunting for insects today I shot two aircraft named after insects. I've captured a de Havilland Dragonfly a few times before but this is the first time I've shot a de Havilland Hornet Moth. These were a development of the Tiger Moth with twin seats and a closed cabin. The RAF wasn't very interested in them so they were marketed as touring aeroplanes for going out and having fun in. They had room in the cabin for a set of golf clubs. This one is from 1936, 164 were built and only a few are still flying.
Hornet moths are also known as hornet clearwings. They are quite scarce in the UK, I've never seen one. I photographed a tiger moth this morning, it was a Jersey tiger. These moths have spread from the Channel Islands and increased markedly in recent years.
