A Saturday in the Life Of…
It seems you can take a girl out of a city but not the city out of the girl. So it was this morning that after a quick turn around from a 9am swim in less than attractive conditions (more autumnal than height of summer) I bowled through to Kirkwall on the regular Stage Coach bus having first ordered for tonight my initial and probably last fish supper takeaway of the holiday, complete with mushy peas. (That was a very long sentence was it not?)
I visited Tesco, Lidl, St Magnus café where I was the sole inhabitant at one point, Poundland for cheap yarn and Peacocks for an extra cheap TShirt, but not forgetting to say hi to Selkie Shona in the Longship. You could call it a quick whizz round the wee smoke.
Back on the return bus to Stromness and a visit to the Pier Gallery on the last day of Sir William Gillies’s exhibition. There is nothing like a ‘last day’ to precipitate action. I loved the exhibition and it was interesting to me personally because he was one of the Edinburgh School of painters which also numbered William Geissler, the father of my oldest school friend (as in long standing!)
I am now sitting it out, waiting to collect my fish supper. You would be forgiven for thinking it was the worst choice for someone intent on watching her diet.
