Between fen and mountains

Speilklok museum

The other family members went into Amsterdam but Mrs TT and I decided to return to Utrecht to visit the mechanical music and clock museum. Of course, I was in my element as we had a guided tour of all the exhibits and the development of the technology from striking bells to bellows to pin drums to punched cards. This particular clock was one of the most grand and intricate ever made. It was made by Charles Clay, clockmaker to King George the second. There were musical clocks, automata, musical boxes, pianolas, barrel organs, fairground and dance organs. It was an amazing place and the tour gave us demonstrations of them all. In the afternoon, we hired a canoe and spent a pleasant hour and a half on a circuit around the pretty canals in the centre of the city.
