The Metals

I finally got to walk the track called The Metals.

The Metals was originally laid out in 1817 as a truck railroad, paved with cast iron rails, designed to bring horse-drawn trucks laden with granite from the quarry for the construction of the Harbour at Dún Laoghaire (Kingstown). For workers in the quarry in Dalkey it was a hazardous workplace with many injuries and fatalities.

Rob Goodbody  gave us an excellent insight into the The Metals when we went on a guided tour with him in July last year. He has written a book called The Metals which unfortunately is out of print. I managed to get my hands on a copy of it and it is full of interesting facts and photographs from the time.

One of the extra photos shows the granite drill to take dynamite.
