Common Buckeye

I hadn't seen one of these since last summer when this one landed on the road in front of us this morning and kindly stayed still as I got closer and closer to it with my phone!

Also on the road, this time racing along so fast it was nearly impossible to get a photo of, was a wasp called a "red velvet ant." A female. Interesting creature! Read about it here. Definitely don't want to be stung by her. Pine needle for scale. They're not small. Maybe slightly over a half inch long?
