One particular harbour.
This is the view of Fortrose Harbour from the cliffs beside St Andrew's Episcopal church.
Thomas Telford carried out a survey of the roads in Scotland Most were military roads constructed my General Wade and Major Caulfeild between 1725 and 1767.Telford became the civil engineer for a large government scheme to improve communications in the Highlands. He not only constructed the Caledonian Canal that we visited on Saturday but also built a number of harbours in the area including Fortrose. In his 20 years he built over 1000 miles of road and 120 bridges. Apparently he was a likeable chap always ready with a joke or story to tell.
The harbour was completed in 1817 and the rose sandstone is thought to come from a quarry near Munlochy. We have a few pieces of flat stone from the quarry around our pond.Fort George is also made of the same stone.
Weathers ok, bit windy but hopefully it will die down by mid afternoon. Nice and warm in the sun especially on the seats on the walk near the harbour where I sat and watched the gulls tackling the wind and the oyster catchers poking for food.
