Abersoch to Aberdaron…

Thirty-five Happy Years…

Woke on our 35th wedding anniversary to blue skies and sunshine.

Had a leisurely lunch at the cottage before heading to Abersoch, a little seaside town about half an hour away. It’s really lovely but was very busy. When researching Abersoch this morning I was so sad to read that it has suffered the negative side of tourism in that lots of properties have been snapped up as second homes or holiday lets, so local residents have been priced out of the housing market to the extent that the primary school had to close. Local authorities (all over, not just here) need to get a grip and start protecting small communities.

From there we headed to Aberdaron and again the sat nav insisted on taking us on back roads. This was fine till we found ourselves on one where we were literally in danger of being engulfed by the hedgerows so we quickly reversed and thanks to a good old fashioned map, found an alternative route!

The view as we arrived in Aberdaron was beautiful. It’s much smaller than Abersoch, still busy but not overly so, so I preferred it. We sat in the warm sunshine overlooking the beach, eating the most delicious ice cream (mint choc chip for me and honeycomb vanilla for D) watching all the goings on, each little group of people telling their own story. The dad trying desperately to launch a dragon-fly shaped kite, four attempts before the wind caught it and took it souring, to the delight of his little toddler daughter, the group of kids laughing and jumping over the waves one falling backwards onto his bottom as a larger wave engulfed him, the two women sunning themselves as their OH’s played football, the elderly woman heading towards the water’s edge but having to make a hasty retreat as her crutches began to sink in the wet sand, and the very lucky couple walking along the beach with two beautiful golden retrievers, one of whom looked very like Lola and brought a pang of longing (I miss her)

And then it was time to head back to our little cottage to get ready for our anniversary dinner at the very lovely Tremfan Hall in Llanbedrog.

The sun was still shining when we left for dinner. Tremfan Hall is in a wonderful location overlooking lLlanbedrog headland, Cardigan Bay and the mountains of Snowdonia. The restaurant was busy (we booked two weeks before we left home) the staff welcoming and friendly, and the food superb. The meal has gone straight into our all time best top 10 meals out.

Much reminiscing about our wedding day and the run up to it, with long forgotten details remembered that made us laugh.

We headed back to the cottage happy and very full! Not sure we’ll be able to top this next year!
